Town hall in Mühlbach

The town hall in Mühlbach , a district of Eppingen in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1903. Its massive construction in local sandstone and its size are evidence of the prosperity that once prevailed in Mühlbach due to the sandstone mining. The building is a cultural monument .

history

A first town hall only existed in Mühlbach from the 19th century, when the place had become an independent municipality in Baden. Before that, all official business had been negotiated in the home of the respective lawyer (mayor) or Vogt. In the 19th century, the municipal administration then moved into a wine press building on the site of the current building, where the town's two denominational schools were also located.

The construction of the new town hall goes back in particular to the growing number of students in Mühlbach around 1900. The old Protestant school building from 1857 was almost doubled in size in 1888, but in 1902 it was no longer sufficient for the expansion of 1888 before all the loans were repaid, so that the school administration pushed for a new school building in May 1902.

At the Grand Ducal Baden District Building Inspectorate in Bruchsal, Building Director Lang then prepared plans for a combined new school and town hall. Although there were various requests for changes in the local committees, Lang pushed for the unchanged implementation of his draft. There were also concerns about the high estimated construction costs, which ultimately benefited the local quarry and construction companies in particular and were therefore approved. The building decision was made on November 22, 1902.

After the old school, council and wine press buildings were demolished, construction began in spring 1903. The stone carving was done by the local companies Johannes Sachsenheimer Sons and Jakob Dettling, the masonry by master mason Michel from Eppingen. Local craftsmen also did blacksmithing and sheet metal work. The building was completed in 1904.

In 1964 the building was enlarged by an extension wing. It served as the town hall until Mühlbach was incorporated into Eppingen in 1972, and since then the town has only had an administrative office with subordinate responsibilities.

The Steinhauermuseum Mühlbach has been in the building since 1998 .
