The paradise is a water art installation in Baden-Baden , which overcomes a height difference of 40 meters on Annaberg.

Location and architecture

Beginning with a fountain grotto with columned arcades, located on Markgrafenstraße, the gardens in the residential area of Friedrichshöhe extend down into the valley over Zeppelinstraße and Prinz-Weimar-Straße to Bernhardstraße. A height difference of 40 meters is overcome. At its upper end, Paradise offers a view of the old town with the tower of the collegiate church , the New Castle and the Friesenberg opposite.

From the grotto on Friedrichshöhe, the water falls over several cascades into a large semicircular basin on Zeppelinstrasse. The central water staircase is flanked by symmetrically arranged villas. In the center of the complex is a stone tablet on which Conrad Ferdinand Meyer's poem The Roman Fountain can be read. The last section consists of a spacious staircase, the end of which is another semicircular fountain basin on Bernhardstrasse.

history

After 1900, the city of Baden-Baden released an area of about one and a half hectares on the slope of the Annaberg for building. A villa area in the style of existing garden cities like Hellerau was planned . However, the First World War let the project stall for the time being.

From 1921 Professor Max Laeuger took over the planning. The architect used the hillside location to build a water art installation. Extensive staircases, wall fountains, pools and benches should adorn the small park. In 1925 the park and residential complex, which was based on the model of Italian Renaissance gardens, was finally completed.

In the 1950s and 1960s, paradise increasingly fell into disrepair, and for a short time the city even considered demolishing the gem. In the course of the state horticultural show held in Baden-Baden in 1981 , the water art installation awoke from its slumber and was largely restored. In 2008 the dilapidated grotto was extensively renovated.
