Wreechen watermill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wreechen watermill is a former watermill in Wreechen , a district of Putbus on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen . Today the privately operated art exhibition and artistic workshop of the old watermill is located in the only partially preserved mill farm .

history

The mill was first mentioned in a document dated January 3, 1396. A Prybor van Pudbuske received 34 Sundisch Marks in income from the Wreechener mill as part of an inheritance division . In 1425 a Wilke Nigenkerken paid 80 marks rent . In 1468, the mayor of Stralsund , Erasmus Steenweg, received ownership of the Hof und Mühle von Klein Wreechen for 525 Sundian marks from his father-in-law Clawes van Pudbuske . At that time, the area around the mill was called Klein Wreechen, in contrast to the Wreechen further south-east. The village was called Groß Wreechen .

Later the mill came back into the possession of the Lords of Putbus. In the oldest existing lease, the mill was leased to Jochim Kellermann from the Putbus rulership in 1652 for an annual rent of seven Drömt Mehl . In 1663 the tenant was called Clawes Nord . The lease was now eight droms.

In 1708 the watermill had to be rebuilt. This was done by Hans Hagen for a price of 80 thalers . In 1717 the miller Claas Hoog left the mill. An inheritance stratification was agreed with the office . The mill also had some cattle, which were divided among the siblings.

In 1763, instead of the previously practiced rent in kind, a specific rent of 56 thalers was agreed. A Timm was later run as a miller , who in 1791 handed the mill over to the Garz master miller Jacob Hermann Witt . The new lease ran for five years. The mill also had a barn and eight acres of arable land. On the occasion of this lease, the inventory was taken , which has been preserved to this day and provides information about the condition of the mill at that time.

After that there was a foundation made of field stones, which however collapsed on the east side. The mill consisted of an eleven inch thick Oberstein, which, however, belonged to Timm and was supplied by the new miller with an inch each with 4 Rtl. was bought. The lower millstone was considered used up. The pan and the mill iron are bad, the tenons are good, the Rinck punch is in good working order. Gear, bushel , mutt , comb and combs were also found to be good. The internal and the external tenon chair are useful. The water wheel and the shaft, with six iron bands, were new and good. The mill bed was lined with fire boards made of spruce .

For the new miller, however, the lease proved to be an economic failure. In the summers, there was a constant lack of water, which prevented normal operation of the water mill. As early as 1783, Witt gave up the mill again, impoverished. The miller's beds and clothes were seized because of debts incurred.

In 1794 a post mill was built for the new miller Behm from Gustow with the permission of the Putbus rulership . Later, however, the mill building was only used as a residential building. In 1875, the mill was therefore removed from the building. The windmill burned down in 1899 after an arson attack . The Mühlenhof was then taken over by Wilhelm Knuth . Knuth, whose family worked as millers for generations, decided to build a small watermill they had designed on the Mühlenbach. He then actually operated this again as a wage mill to grind grain for customers. After his death, Hans Knuth took over the mill and operated it until 1936 as a grist mill for personal use.

The Künstlerhaus Kunstort Alte Wassermühle, built after the fire in 2003, was built in 2015.

Around the turn of the millennium, the mill farm was acquired by an artist couple. The property still consisted of a dwelling house and stable, the mill system was no longer preserved. The house and in 2001 the stable were renovated. The stable was converted into an artist's studio, gallery and exhibition space. The half-timbered structure of the stable was renovated and partially re-bricked. In 2003 the house was completely destroyed by fire. A new house was built on the foundations of the former house.
