Water tower (iosefin)
The water tower in Iosefin ( romanian Turnul de apă din Iosefin ) is under monument protection standing water tower in the Strada Gheorghe Pop de Basesti in IV. District Iosefin ( German Josefstadt ) of west Romanian city of Timisoara ( German Timisoara ). It stands on the right side of the Bega , between the Podul Muncii and Pasarela Gelu bridges . The tobacco factory in Iosefin is also nearby .
history
The water tower was completed in 1914 according to plans by the architect László Székely on an area of 638 square meters and is 52 meters high. In 1912, another identical water tower was built at the other end of the network in the Fabric district to equalize pressure during peak times . A telephone was used to communicate between the towers. In 1940 operations were stopped.
description
The lower part of the tower is cylindrical and framed by vertical ribs. The staircase leads to a narrow spiral staircase. The tower has a number of rectangular windows and the top of the tower with the water tank is shorter and thicker. The top is finished with a two-story domed roof.
The tower is owned by the Timisoara Mayor's Office and managed by Aquatim .
Despite its monument protection, the tower is threatened with decay. Currently (as of April 2010) the lower part of the tower is overgrown with ivy .
