The water tower in Schweinheim , a district of the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn , was built in 1905. It stands as a monument under monument protection .

location

The water tower is located at the upper edge of the district at 168  m above sea level. NHN on Waldstrasse, in the immediate vicinity of Viktorshöhe .

history

The need to build a separate water tower for the higher areas of the community of Godesberg, whose water supply was from 1901 through a waterworks in the Plittersdorfer Aue, was in particular due to a major fire in the Godesheim diaspora orphanage (founded in 1888) on the night of April 20-21, 1903, apparently. Effective fire fighting by the Godesberg volunteer fire brigade was prevented by insufficient water pressure , so that a house on the site burned down to the surrounding walls. Since the construction of an elevated tank was also ruled out due to the topographical conditions, the plan for the construction of a water tower was then drawn up. It was in the hands of the "Kölnische Maschinenbau Aktien-Gesellschaft" and took on costs of 53,000 marks , in which the residents (including Godesheim) also had to contribute. The static calculation for the tower is dated January 30, 1905.

The pumping station belonging to the water tower was on the corner of Winterstrasse and Am Burgblick. In November 1984 the water tower was registered as a technical monument or industrial monument in the list of monuments of the city of Bonn. At the end of the 1990s it was still used to supply water to the higher-lying areas of Schweinheim, but at that time it was already intended to be replaced by pressure boosting systems .

description

The water tower is 18 m high and designed as a so-called Intze container with a diameter of 7 m, a height of 3.7 m and a capacity of 150 m³. An essential feature of the Schweinheim tower - which makes it a special form of a type building - is its different and unique construction method in the Rhineland with a four-storey, uncovered steel frame as the substructure of a cased container instead of the otherwise usual solid masonry shaft .
