The Eilsleben water tower is a listed water tower in Eilsleben in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It stands west of Eilsleben on a hill immediately south of the former Eilsleben – Schöningen railway line , at whose kilometer stone 173.0. The property is referred to as corridor 4, parcel 31. The Aller runs a little further west of the tower . In this direction there are also other buildings that originally belonged to the tower.

Architecture and history

The water tower was built between 1869 and 1872 as a water supply for the Eilsleben depot. Due to the Franco-German War in 1870/71, the construction of the project was interrupted . Its height is 24 meters. In the tower head there is a four meter high water tank with a diameter of eight meters that could hold 200 m³ of water. The diameter of the tower is ten meters at a height of five meters. The brick tower rests on a base made of rubble stones. The tower is covered by a wooden roof structure.

The facility also included four deep wells , two surface water sumps , a building for pumps and a building for the pumping station attendant and his family. The system was constantly operated and maintained by the pump keeper. Water was pumped from the pumping station into the reservoir of the water tower. From this storage facility, water at high pressure was provided via large cast iron pipes for the three water cranes that were used to refuel steam locomotives in Eilsleben . A water crane could deliver 10 m³ of water per minute and a locomotive could be completely refilled in about three minutes. The tower's total water supply was enough for around five to seven locomotives. The system also included a float which, when the elevated tank was completely full , closed a valve and prevented further flow of water. There was also an overflow that led to the outside at the foot of the tower. A complete emptying of the tower was also possible via another valve. The pump house was later also used to chlorinate the drinking water for the railroad workers' houses.

The pump station to the west of the tower was a popular excursion destination in the region until around 1950. The pump attendant sold bottled drinks there. In the park on the Aller there were tables and benches that were used for picnics .

After passenger traffic on the railway line was discontinued in the 1970s, freight traffic also ended in 1993.

The water tower had lost its original use and fell into disrepair, although it is a landmark of the region. In 1999 the community acquired Eilsleben. First of all, security measures against unauthorized entry and the removal of vegetation followed. At the same time, the bricked up staircase inside the tower could be exposed again. On January 31, 2000, the community of interests water tower eV was founded, which was dedicated to the rescue of the tower. The preparation of the roof renovation and work on the spiral staircase and the tower base took place with two employees from a job creation scheme. The tower was scaffolded on August 18, 2001. On October 20, 2001, the old spire was dismantled and set down on the ground for restoration work. The roof was then renovated. After the erection of the topping-out crown on November 7, 2001, bad weather initially prevented further work, which led to increased costs for the scaffolding that was still standing. In December 2001, the renewed tip was then put back on the tower.

Various donation campaigns were held to finance the work. On June 2, 2001, the Greyhair music group gave a benefit concert in the Eilsleber sports hall. In May 2002 a CD with a song about the tower was released. T-shirts and calendars were also sold.

This was followed by work on the design of the tower environment and the creation of a hiking trail between the tower and the pump station. From April 2003, the tower's cast iron windows were repaired and the top of the tower was re-glazed.

Today (as of 2016) the pump station is looked after by the MC Darker eV motorcycle club. The area serves as a site for motorcycle meetings and family celebrations.

In the local register of monuments , the water tower is listed as a monument under registration number 094 97864 .
