The Peseckendorf water tower is a listed building in the Peseckendorf district of the city of Oschersleben (Bode) in Saxony-Anhalt . The structure, originally built as a lookout tower, later served as a water tower and is now unused.

history

In Peseckendorf, first mentioned in a document in 1086, the lords of Asseburg took over the fiefdom of the manor there, which had become vacant . The associated parish village of Peseckendorf lay desolate for some time from 1494 . In 1617 Busso von der Asseburg rebuilt the manor with strong ramparts and moats into a relatively safe renaissance castle, which was of good use to him in the Thirty Years' War . The castle was on four hills in the castle park near the in the years 1905-1912 by the renowned architects today Paul Schultze-Naumburg built Peseckendorf castle are clearly visible. At the end of the 19th century, the manor owner Friedrich Schaeper built an observation tower on the hill to the southwest. From the tower there was a wide panoramic view of the Magdeburg Börde and the neighboring district town of Oschersleben (Bode) as well as towards Magdeburg , whose distinctive cathedral towers could be seen in good weather.

In the course of the palace construction, the observation tower was converted into a water tower in 1912 at the latest, which supplied the palace with drinking water. The necessary water was obtained from a well in the immediate vicinity of the tower, which is still there today. After the construction of modern drinking water pipes after the Second World War, the water tower lost its function and fell into disrepair. At the initiative of the Peseckendorf Culture and Heritage Association, the tower was completely renovated in 2000. It is no longer in use today and is only open for guided tours or on the day of the open monument. Since there are no longer any fixtures inside (especially the former wooden staircase), the tower cannot be climbed or used as a lookout tower.

The participants in the compulsory art course at the Oschersleben grammar school created various designs for a memorial plaque to the botanist Johann Thal , who died in Peseckendorf as a result of an accident while visiting the Count of Asserburg. On September 13, 2017, as part of the Open Monument Day, a design was selected that will in future be reminiscent of Johann Thal on the old water tower.
