Wassil Nikolow Slatarski ( Bulgarian Васил Николов Златарски , mostly Vasil Zlatarski ; born November 14, 1866 in Tarnowo , † December 15, 1935 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian historian .

Slatarski studied in St. Petersburg and Berlin (1893–1895). In 1897 he became a lecturer and in 1900 a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences . In 1901 he became an associate professor, in 1906 a full professor and in 1921 head of the chair of Bulgarian history at the University of Sofia . Slatarski was one of the founders of the Bulgarian Historical Society and chaired the society from 1921 to 1925

In 1916, Slatarski was one of the participants in a scientific reconnaissance expedition commissioned by the General Staff of the Bulgarian Army during the First World War , in the areas of Macedonia and the Pomoravlje region that were reconquered by the Bulgarians at that time .

In his scientific work he dealt in particular with the history of medieval Bulgaria. He conducted research in the fields of history, archeology , epigraphy and numismatics . Slatarski's publications dealt with the cultural and political history of Bulgaria and neighboring states from the beginnings of Bulgaria to the end of the 19th century. His most important work is the History of the Bulgarian State in the Middle Ages , published in Bulgarian from 1918 to 1940 .
