Life
Vasily Karasin was born in Kruchik in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Kharkiv as the child of a noble father of Greek descent and a mother of Ukrainian Cossacks. After he had completed his education in Kharkov and Kremenchuk , he went to St. Petersburg to the military school. However, he withdrew from this in 1798 in order to continue his education abroad. However, he was arrested while crossing the border near Kovno and later, after an audience with Russian Emperor Paul I, pardoned him.
After Emperor Alexander I took office in 1801, he began to initiate reforms. So he became one of the initiators of the first Ministry of Education in Europe, and it was on his initiative that the University of Kharkov was founded in 1803. The money for the opening of the university came from merchants such as Egor Uryupin, Stepan Kurdjumow and Artyom Karpov. In 1819/20 Karasin was vice-president of the Free Society for Lovers of Russian Literature and editor of the magazine "The Competitor of Enlightenment and Poor Care" (in the original: "Соревнователь просвещения и благотворения").
His first wife Domna Iwanowa died in 1796. Karasin had eight children from his second wife Alexandra Wassiljewna Karasina (Muchina; née von Blankennagel). Karasina came from Anashkino near Moscow and belonged to the German - Russian nobility . She is considered to be the first to translate the writings of Jean de La Fontaine into Russian.
Vasily Karasin played a prominent role in the dissemination of progressive ideas in Ukraine and did fundamental work in various fields of knowledge. In particular, his discoveries and inventions in the fields of the food industry, meteorology and chemistry were significant.
