Wassili Wassiljewitsch Orlov-Denissow ( Russian Василий Васильевич Орлов-Денисов , scientific transliteration Vasilij Vasil'evič Orlov-Denisov; born September 19, 1775 ; † February 5, 1843 in Charkow ) was a Russian general of the cavalry. He came from a noble Cossack family and was originally called Vasily Orlow. His grandfather Fedor Denisov († 1811) was the first Cossack general of the Russian Empire to hold the title of count. On May 8, 1801, Vasily Orlow was allowed to add his grandfather's family name, Denisov, to his name.

Life

At the age of 14 he began his military service in the Imperial Russian Army in January 1789 and was appointed Sotnik (leader of a hundred Cossacks) on October 15th. In 1792 he joined the Krasnov Cossack regiment. On July 14, 1799 he was appointed colonel. In 1806 he switched to the Cossacks of the Guard and in 1807 took part in the war against France, in which Russia stood on Prussia's side. He fought in Guttstadt , Heilsberg and Friedland . For his services he was promoted to major general on December 24, 1807, and on July 1, 1808, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class. As commander of the Guard Cossacks, to which he was appointed on August 2 of the same year, he took part in the war in Finland and fought at Borgo and Helsingfors. In 1811 he became adjutant general to the Russian emperor.

After the French attack on Russia in 1812, he led the rearguard of the 1st Russian Western Army. In the battle of Borodino (September 7th) he led three cavalry regiments under Platov and Uvarow behind the lines of the enemy infantry. In the Battle of Tarutino the first squadron commanded the attacking cavalry. In the following battles at Malojaroslavets and Krasnoye , his cavalry division consisted of 6 Cossack regiments and the Neschyn Dragoons regiment. In January 1813 he received the Order of St. George, 3rd class.

In the spring campaign he covered the convoy of Tsar Alexander I and intermittently intervened in the battles near Lützen , Bautzen and Dresden . After the battle of Kulm , he received the rank of lieutenant general on September 15, 1813 . He also distinguished himself at the Battle of Leipzig , where his horsemen were forced to intervene when masses of French cavalry tried to break through the center of the Russian army under Barclay de Tolly . During Napoleon's retreat to the Rhine , Orlow-Denisow's light cavalry corps was commissioned to pursue the French to Hanau. In the liberation war of 1814 Orlov-Denisov was part of the company of Emperor Alexander I.

On September 11, 1825 he was appointed commander of the 5th Reserve Cavalry Corps and on September 3, 1826 general of the cavalry. In October 1827 he took his leave of the army, but rejoined the army in 1828 and took part in the war against Turkey . In 1830 he finally left the army.
