Watershed is the ninth studio album by the Swedish progressive metal band Opeth . It was released on May 19, 2008 on Roadrunner Records and is the last Opeth album to date that still contains growl vocals and other distinct death metal elements.

history

The album was essentially created in the period from winter 2006/07 to January 10, 2008 in Fascination Street Studios in Örebro , Sweden . It's the first without longtime guitarist Peter Lindgren . Instead, guitarist Fredrik Åkesson joined in, and drummer Martin Axenrot can also be heard for the first time. In March 2008, Travis Smith's cover design was revealed. The piece Heir Apparent had been played by the band in advance and was therefore already circulating as a live version on YouTube .

Criticism and success

Chris True wrote on Allmusic that Opeth could have easily copied the predecessor Ghost Reveries , but had decided to record a challenging album. The site awarded 4 out of 5 stars. The album reached number 23 in both Germany and the USA. In Finland it reached number 1 in the charts.
