Wavy Gravy ("Wavy Sauce"; actually Hugh Romney ; born May 15, 1936 in East Greenbush , New York ) is an American activist , hippie , clown and author . He allegedly got the unusual stage name from BB King . He was considered the "official clown" of the band Grateful Dead .

Gravy was a member of the Merry Pranksters .

Wavy Gravy is also the name of an ice cream variety named after the "clown prince of the Woodstock generation" (as read on the website of the ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's ). Wavy Gravy said of himself, "I'm an activist clown and frozen dessert".

In the early 1960s, Hugh Romney was a driving force in the underground scene in New York's Greenwich Village . In 1965 he and friends founded the Hog Farm ("pig farm") near Los Angeles , a hippie commune in the vicinity of the Grateful Dead . The Hog Farm was in charge of security at the 1969 Woodstock Festival .

Annually, Wavy Gravy hosts the Hog Farm Family Pig-Nic, a music and culture festival, at the Black Oak Ranch near Laytonville , California . In addition, every summer he organizes Camp Winnarainbow, a circus and artist holiday camp for children and adults from disadvantaged backgrounds.
