Wawel Kraków , formerly known as OWKS Kraków , is a Polish football club based in Kraków in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . The club, which already played in the Ekstraklasa , now only plays in the seventh class A.
history
The association was founded in 1919 under the name KS Wawel . The name was chosen in honor of the Wawel Castle located in the middle of the city . In 1928 the club merged with another Krakow club that had military roots. Between 1945 and 1949 the club had many different names, all of which referred to the Polish army .
In 1952, the club was the first winner of the Puchar Ekstraklasy with a 5-1 victory over Cracovia Krakow .
The club took second place in the Ekstraklasa in 1953 under the name OWKS Kraków behind Ruch Chorzów and in front of the Wisła Krakau club, also from Kraków . In the same year, the club left the top class, as only Legia had the right to play as an army team in the Ekstraklasa. The club was in the second division until 1964, and again in 1996 for three seasons. In 1957 the association gave itself the name WKS Wawel Kraków , which it still leads today.
The club has a football stadium with a tartan track , which was opened in 1953. Since 2002 the club has seven departments: athletics , soccer , volleyball , tennis , shooting , orienteering and parachuting .
