Wayne O. Burkes

Wayne O. Burkes (born December 6, 1929 in Philadelphia , Mississippi ) is a Republican American politician . He was a member of the Surface Transportation Board .

Life

Wayne Burkes attended Arlington High School in Philadelphia until 1950 . He then studied at Mississippi College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955 . He then worked as an insurance salesman at Allstate Insurance Company until 1963. He studied at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary until 1966, when he graduated with a Master of Divinity . In 1974 he made a Master of Education at Mississippi College . He was later awarded an honorary Legum Magister by the college .

From 1966 to 1989 he was a pastor at the Bolton Baptist Church in Bolton , and from 1969 to 1976 he also worked at Hinds Community College as a teacher, consultant and administrative director.

In 1976, the Member who was the Republican Party to the Mississippi House of Representatives voted. After that he was State Senator from 1980 to 1989 . From 1989 to 1999, Burkes was the transportation officer for the Central District of Mississippi. On January 6, 1999, he was nominated by US President Bill Clinton for the seat previously held by Gus Owen on the Surface Transportation Board . It was ratified by the United States Senate on February 22 of the same year. He was a member of this authority until March 20, 2003. He was succeeded by Francis P. Mulvey .

Wayne Burkes was a pilot in the Mississippi Air National Guard from 1956 to 1989 . Among other things, he was deployed in Vietnam . From 1986 he held the rank of Major General . He flew eight different types of aircraft, including the Lockheed C-141 and the North American B-25 , and had over 7,000 flight hours.

Wayne Burkes' first wife died in 1993. He had two sons with her. In 1999 he married again. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America , the Rotary Club , the National Guard Association of Mississippi, and other organizations.
