Weberocereus glaber is a species of plant in the genus Weberocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet is derived from the Latin adjective glaber for 'smooth' or 'bald' and refers to the bald shoots.
description
Weberocereus glaber grows climbing with shoots lying flat or hanging on the substrate, branching laterally and developing numerous aerial roots . The light green shoots are somewhat round at their base, triangular above and flat to somewhat concave between the ribs . They are 2 to 3 meters long and 1.5 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The areoles on the shoots, initially covered with black wool , later turn white. There are up to five cream-colored thorns that are 1 to 3 millimeters long.
The funnel-shaped, cream-colored flowers are 9 to 14 centimeters long and appear individually at or near the tip of the shoot. Your pericarpel is covered with brownish black wool and numerous twisted bristles as well as up to twelve straight, piercing, up to 1 centimeter long thorns. The spherical, cloudy, pale yellow fruits smell and have a length of up to 7 centimeters. They are covered with numerous thorns and hairs. Their pulp is white.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Weberocereus glaber is distributed in the Mexican state of Chiapas as well as in Guatemala and El Salvador .
It was first described as Cereus glaber in 1910 by Friedrich Eichlam . Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in the genus Weberocereus in 1982 . A synonym is Werckleocereus glaber (Eichlam) Britton & Rose (1917).
A distinction is made between the following varieties :
- Weberocereus glaber var. Glaber
- Weberocereus glaber var. Mirandae (Bravo) UMEliasson
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
