An interchangeable viewfinder is a component of a camera which is used to view the image section and which can be removed from the camera. The term is used in the narrower sense of reflex cameras whose viewfinder (which is used to view the focusing screen ) can be exchanged for another in order to adapt the camera to different photographic tasks.

There are the following alternate viewfinder types, for example:

  • Light shaft finder : Simple shaft for viewing the screen from above, some with a magnifying glass.
  • Prism viewfinder: viewfinder with prism optics for generating an upright and laterally correct image; View from behind or below 45 °; partly with enlarged pupil.
  • Sports viewfinder: A prism viewfinder with a larger entrance pupil .
  • TTL prism viewfinder: prism viewfinder with built-in exposure metering (partly with coupling to camera elements).
  • Magnifier viewfinder: Similar to the light shaft with a view from above, but through a magnifying glass an enlarged viewfinder image.
  • Auto focus viewfinder: viewfinder with built-in auto focus function (Nikon F3 AF).
  • Viewfinder with grid lines for architectural photography
