History and description

The former Mayor of Weismain, Johann Moritz Schmelzing, had a first path chapel built on the site of today's chapel. It was primarily used for the private prayer of the faithful and as a station for Corpus Christi processions . She was maintained by the Corporis Christi Brotherhood .

As the chapel had become dilapidated, the church administration decided in 1840 to replace the chapel with a new building, today's chapel, in the neo-renaissance style . The new building is a true-to-original copy of the previous building and was carried out by the master mason Konrad Müller in Weismain. He submitted the draft for it on September 7, 1840.

It is a square sandstone building closed on three sides with a slate gable roof . The front consists of a large, open archway, which is closed by wrought-iron lattice doors, but allows a clear view of the interior of the chapel. The crucifix inside the chapel dates from around 1680 by an unknown artist and already adorned the previous building. The figures of Mary and John the Baptist have disappeared . There are two sandstone pilasters on either side of the archway .
