The white-eyed moray ( Gymnothorax thyrsoideus ) lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Christmas Island to French Polynesia, north to the Ryūkyū Islands , throughout Micronesia and south to Tonga . It is common and mainly inhabits shallow lagoons , reefs near the coast, reef roofs of oceanic islands, tide pools, seaweed and seagrass fields at depths of 0.2 to 30 meters. It is also found regularly in shipwrecks.
The white-eyed moray grows up to 65 centimeters long. Their color is yellowish to gray-brown, the eyes are white. The teeth stand in two rows on the vomer . They differ from the first three to four teeth that are in a row.
White-eyed moray eels live in pairs, often in small groups with other species or with other moray eel species. In rare cases, up to 50 moray eels can live together.
