The white-winged pompadourkotinga ( Xipholena atropurpurea ), also known as the white-winged purple bird , is a conspicuously patterned bird from the family of ornamental birds (Cotingidae) native to Brazil .

It reaches a size of 19 centimeters. The male has a black-purple body. The plumage is paler colored on the back and rump. The tail is short. The wings are white with black tips on the wing feathers. The iris is whitish. The upper side is ash gray in the female. A weakly indicated eye stripe can be seen on the head. The darker wings are lined with white. The tail is dark in color. The throat is pale gray and the whitish chest is speckled with dark. On the rest of the underside, the plumage is gray-white. His voice is high.

distribution

Its occurrence is limited to 13 protected areas in the eastern Brazilian states of Paraíba , Pernambuco , Alagoas , Sergipe , Bahia , Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro .

Way of life

Its habitat are the primary lowlands and the adjacent foothills of the Atlantic rainforest, mostly in coastal forests. In the northern part of its range it occurs in the dense primary forest, in more thinned forests and semi-deciduous forests. But it can also be found in selectively felled primary and secondary forests as well as in fragmented forest parcels.

Its diet consists of fruits such as mulberries, mistletoe and laurel, as well as larvae of butterflies and right winged birds. It can usually be found alone on fruit trees, but in southern Bahia it has also been seen in the company of thrushes or the rare southern splendor kotinga .

The males show up between November and February and the nests are set up high in a fork in October or November.
