The Weißschuppige Ohnschild-borer ( acmaeoderella flavofasciata ) is a beetle from the family of the jewel beetle . The German name indicates the missing label . The 6.5 to 11 millimeter long beetle is rare in Central Europe.

Description of the beetle

The body is cylindrical, rounded at the front and pointed at the back and almost three times as long as it is wide.

The head is much wider than it is long when viewed from above. The eleven-segment antennae are short, gradually thickened up to the fifth segment, and blunt-toothed from the fifth segment onwards. The upper lip is almost square and slightly cut out in front. The double-toothed upper jaw is strongly curved. The last link of the jaw probe is elongated, egg-shaped, the last link of the lip probe is conical.

The head and pronotum are wrinkled, dotted and hairy. The pronotum is twice as wide as it is long. The base is straight and grooved lengthways.

The wing covers are fused together at the seam . They are dotted, striped and the spaces in between are wrinkled. In the middle of the spaces there is a row of short white bristles (Fig. 3). The yellow drawing is very variable. On the back half there are two cross bands, behind each a small stain and in front of it several stains of different sizes. However, cross-ties and stains can be greatly reduced. The wing covers end together rounded to the rear, the side edge is sawn towards the tip. A label is not recognizable. It is assumed that in the course of evolution the tag got wider and fused with the base of the wing covers.

The entire underside is dense chalk-white scales (visible in picture 2). The narrow tarsi are all five-limbed and only the fourth tarsal is enlarged like a lobe. The claw link is rounded and longer than the previous one.

Occurrence

The larva feeds under the bark of weakened oaks, but is not strictly monophagous . Chestnut, beech and juniper are also mentioned. The beetle can be found on the breeding trees in Central Europe between May and August, but more frequently on the yellow daisy family .

The species penetrates from southern Europe to southern central Europe, from the southeast to Austria. There are no recent finds in Germany. The beetle is also found in North Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia.

The beetle is strictly protected in Germany (Category 1 - critically endangered).
