  • The white-cheeked heron is a dainty heron with a body length of about 66 to 68 centimeters, about half of which is made up of the body. The wingspan is 106 centimeters. White-cheeked herons weigh an average of 550 grams.

    The plumage of the barnacle heron is mostly bluish-gray in color. The face, however, is strikingly white and the belly is cream-colored. Its beak is dark gray and the legs are yellowish in color.

    Occurrence

    Its distribution area includes Southeast Asia , Australia , New Zealand and large parts of Oceania . You can find it there in salt water as well as in brackish and fresh water.

    White-cheeked herons breed in small colonies. They build their nests consisting of branches and twigs on tall trees near the shore. There the female lays three to five eggs of blue-green color. The eggs are incubated by both adult birds. Both parents also share the supply of food for the young birds. Preferred prey include fish , amphibians , mollusks, and crustaceans .
