The viticulture in northern Macedonia has a long tradition as in neighboring countries. The climate in North Macedonia is mixed Mediterranean - continental , the vineyards cover around 22,400 hectares. In the 1980s, two thirds of Yugoslavia's total wine production was produced in SR Macedonia . Today the 40 or so wineries have been completely privatized. The most important winery is the Tikves winery, founded in 1946 as a cooperative . The Viticulture Act, which came into force in 2004, is based on EU standards. 80% of the vineyards are planted with red wine varieties, in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot , especially with local varieties such as Vranec , Prokupac and Kratosija . White grape varieties are Smederevra , Welschriesling and some Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc .

In 2011 the country had a vineyard area of 22,000 ha and in 2011 produced 665,000 hl of wine.
