List of grape varieties

Prokupac is an autochthonous grape variety in Serbia, known in the region since the Middle Ages (as 'Rskavac'). The red wines obtained are brightly colored, ruby red, rich in alcohol and have spicy fruit aromas. They are more intended for quick enjoyment. The variety is often blended with international varieties. Dark rosé wines are also produced from this grape variety.

The variety is now planted by private companies in Serbia and vinified according to the variety. The wines have good recognition potential. They are already a mainstay in the marketing of Serbian wines.

Descent, origin

'Prokupac' is an autochthonous grape variety from Serbia, the origin of which is not known. The name 'Prokupac' refers to the town of Prokuplje in the Toplička regija. Viticulture in Prokuplje was first mentioned in a charter to the Athos monastery Hilandar , by Princess Milica Hrebeljanović in 1395.

distribution

'Prokupac' vines already dominated medieval viticulture in Serbia , which was regulated by numerous documents and laws from Tsar Dušans (Zakonik), and later in the wine taxation (čabrina) by Stefan Lazarević . Important wine-growing regions in Serbia formed in the 13th – 15th centuries. Century the wine region Metochien in the wine region Prizrener (Velika and Mala Hoča, Orahovac), and later around Kruševac in the Župa and along the Velika Morava .

Due to the Balkan Wars , the First World War and the decimation by phylloxera between 1913 and 1923, there was a total loss of all unrefined vines. In 1920 a new beginning was started in Orahovac. In 1923 vine documents were introduced. 95% of the new plants were planted with the 'Prokupac' variety. In 1939 there was a vineyard area of 3236 ha.

After the Second World War, thanks to measures taken to nationalize farms, wine production was the responsibility of state agricultural combines until 2001. In the transition, these state-owned combines could no longer keep up qualitatively with privately run companies. Today, young private companies already dominate the market with high-quality wines of the 'Prokupac' variety.

In addition to Serbia, the variety is also represented to a small extent in Macedonia , Bosnia-Herzegovina , Croatia and Hungary .

The world cultivation area is 15,180 ha.
