Dönnhoff winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hermann Dönnhoff winery is located in Oberhausen an der Nahe , a municipality in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Nahe wine-growing region in Germany .

history

Since 1991 the winery has been a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries . The vines grow on nine different " first layers ". The winery is run by the third generation. Helmut Dönnhoff took over the estate from his father Hermann in 1971 and expanded it to its current size of 25 hectares. Cornelius Dönnhoff has been responsible for the cellar since 2007. The winery is internationally known for its Rieslings.

Growing area / soil

The vines grow on steep and steep slopes in a volcanic landscape. The soils are mostly made of black-gray slate , interspersed with volcanic igneous rock, porphyry and limestone .

The winery grows 80% Riesling and 20% Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The Hermannshöhle is the most important location of the winery. For over 100 years it has been the highest rated location on the Nahe. A small mine tunnel in the middle of this location ("cave") is responsible for the name. Hermann is derived from Hermes, the Roman patron god of messengers and travelers and probably a reference to an old cult site at this point.
