Salomon Undhof

Salomon Undhof is an Austrian winery in Krems-Stein in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria .

history

The Undhof in the Krems district of Stein an der Donau was originally the farm building of the nearby Capuchin monastery Und. The name “And” is derived from the former Latin name for the monastery “Claustrum ad undam” (literally: monastery on the shaft - actually: monastery on the Danube wave). In 1792 Franz Salomon took over the Undhof, since then the former monastery property has been managed by the Salomon family (whose origins are in South Tyrol). Fritz Salomon (1905 to 1971) established its reputation as an Austrian model winery , who was already producing quality wine with bottle filling before the Second World War . Bertold Salomon and his wife Gertrud Salomon have been running the Undhof in the seventh generation since 2003. Bertold Salomon was first sales manager at the Freie Weingärtnern Wachau (later Domain Wachau ) and then a member of the board of Schlumberger AG in Vienna. Bertold Salomon inscribed himself in the annals of Austrian wine history as head of the Austrian Wine Marketing GmbH (ÖWM): Under his ÖWM aegis (1994 to 2001) the foundation of the marketing system for wines typical of origin ( DAC ) was laid. Bertold Salomon, who holds a doctorate in commercial science, who actually had other career plans, was recalled to Salomon Undhof in 2003 because his brother Erich Salomon (1943 to 2007) fell ill.

Salomon Undhof

The vineyards of Salomon Undhof are located in excellent terraced areas around Stein an der Donau. The vineyard area covers 30 hectares (as of 2012) and is 100 percent planted with white vines. The Kremser Kögl and the Pfaffenberg , where the Salomon Undhof owns vineyards, are among the most respected Riesling locations in Austria . Outstanding Grüner Veltliners from Salomon Undhof mature on the Wachtberg and Lindberg . Directly next to the Salomon Undhof is the vineyard Wieden , planted with Grüner Veltliner , which (in the economic tradition of the old monasteries) is still surrounded by a massive wall today. The vineyards belonging to the Salomon Undhof are cultivated according to KIP guidelines (KIP = controlled integrated production ) - with no chemical biocides or chemical fertilization. The vinification of the grape juices in the Salomon Undhof is preferably done with natural yeast.

The Salomon Undhof's wine range focuses on dry Rieslings and Grüner Veltliner with outstanding minerality. In addition, depending on the year, there are always considerable quality wines in the range. Noteworthy are the predicate wines, which are characterized by loess and old vines, which the Salomon Undhof produces from the Gelber Traminer variety .

Salomon Undhof is a member of the traditional Austrian wineries and the Austrian winegrowing group Tu felix Austria .

Salomon Estate

In 1995 Bertold Salomon and his wife Gertrud Salomon founded the farm Salomon Estate on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia . The property covers 50 hectares, of which one (smaller) part is planted with vines and the other part with olive trees. The vineyard area is 12 hectares (as of 2012), which is mainly planted with red grape varieties; 0.2 hectares are planted with the white Viognier grape variety . The Fleurieu Peninsula region has significant differences in altitude with different microclimates, which are also influenced by cool sea breezes. The maritime climate favors the elegance of the Syrah , Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties planted by Salomon Estate . Top wine from Salomon Estate is the Alttus , which British wine critic Jancis Robinson put on a par with the top Syrahs from Hermitage .

The involvement of Salomon Estate in Australia has a historical prelude: The great-great-uncle Bertold Salomons, the Jesuit father Johann Nepomuk Hinteröcker, emigrated from the Wachau to South Australia in 1866. After he first three years in the Mission Seven Hills had spent in Clare Valley, which is also operating viticulture, he founded in Norwood, a suburb of Adelaide , the St. Ignatius church with attached College. He is buried in the St. Ignatius Church that he built. His memory is honored with the Norwood red wine cuvée produced by Salomon Estate .

Salomon & Andrew

Together with the New Zealand oenologist and winemaker Chris Andrew, Bertold Salomon set up the Salomon & Andrew joint venture in New Zealand . Chris Andrew had previously (2008) worked as an intern at the Salomon Undhof in Krems-Stein. The possibility of founding this joint venture arose because of the geographical proximity of New Zealand to South Australia, where Bertold and Gertrud Salomon each spend part of the year. A varietal Sauvignon Blanc and a varietal Pinot Noir are marketed under the Salomon & Andrew label .
