Wittmann winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wittmann winery is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Westhofen in the Wonnegau area of the German wine-growing region Rheinhessen . In 2014 the winery cultivated around 25 hectares of vineyards. The winery is a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP).

history

The typical, Rheinhessen mixed operation, which is said to date from the 17th century, began with the bottling of its own wines in 1921. In the 1980s, the owners Günter and Elisabeth Wittman switched to organic viticulture . The biodynamic economy was introduced in 2003. Since then, the Westhofen winery has contributed significantly to the increased reputation of the wine-growing region.

The son Philipp Wittmann studied at the Geisenheim University and has been the cellar master since 1999 , co-owner since 2007 and the oenologist of the winery. Philipp was chairman of the VDP in Rheinhessen from 2005 to 2019 and is vice-president of the Federal Association of the VDP. The “ Gault-Millau ” wine guide voted Philipp Wittmann “Winegrower of the Year” 2014. “Wittmann is one of the pioneers in organic viticulture,” said the jury. For several years now, he has been producing dry Rieslings that “mature in a beguiling way” .

Vineyards, soils and grape varieties

The most important locations of the Wittmann winery are the Morstein , Aulerde and Kirchspiel. The large plants of the estate are compulsorily produced from these locations . The terroir is spread over clay marl , loess , loam and weathered limestone soils , which gives the wines complexity and fullness. Results of a soil assessment in 1930 in the course of the then new wine law / Reich soil assessment confirm the quality class I of the core locations of the company. The best wines of the winery are sold under the location name, in the middle segment the local wines "Westhofener", while the other quality wines up to the Kabinett are marketed as estate wines.

The winery produces around 65% Riesling , 10% Silvaner, 20% Burgundy varieties ( Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc ).
