Wellesley is a municipality in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario with 10,710 inhabitants (2011).

geography

The Wellesley area joins the cities of Cambridge , Kitchener and Waterloo to the northwest . About 75 kilometers south-east is Hamilton , 110 kilometers east of Toronto . The Nith River touches Wellesley in the south.

history

Most of the first settlers in the area came from Germany. The area was not measured in detail until 1843. In 1861 there were already 6,000 people living there, most of whom lived from agriculture. However, since there was no railway line through the place, it grew only slowly and was initially named Schmidtsville, but was later renamed Wellesley in honor of Richard Colley-Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley .

Agriculture is still the dominant industry today. On the last Saturday in September each year, Wellesley hosts the Apple Butter and Cheese Festival , which has grown into a tourist attraction and attracts several thousand visitors. A large number of foods are on offer, in particular various cakes and pancakes with maple syrup , apple butter as well as sausage and cheese specialties.

Wellesley has a number of historic buildings on the List of historic places in Regional Municipality of Waterloo , including Queen's Tavern, Reiner House, and St. John's Lutheran Church.
