The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a 937 acres (3.8 square kilometers ) comprehensive protected area in Wellfleet in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The protected area on the coast includes salt marshes , sandy beach ridges and forest areas and thus offers a habitat for a large variety of plants and animals such as fiddler crabs and green herons . There are 5 mi (8 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors, 0.5 mi (0.8 km) of which are barrier-free . In addition, programs for research and protection of threatened animal species are carried out in the protected area.
