Wellington Church

The Wellington Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The parish previously used Wellington Street Church in central Glasgow. John Baird designed the now demolished building. Thomas Lennox Watson won the bidding process for Wellington Church with his classical design and prevailed against John Burnet . Wellington Church opened on October 11, 1884.

The building is at the intersection of Southpark Avenue and University Avenue . Opposite is the Gilbert Scott Building , the main building of the University of Glasgow , with the McMillan Reading Room on the left . A portico in the style of Greek temple architecture with six Corinthian columns emerges on the south-facing front . Above the unadorned frieze and below the final triangular gable there is a cut of teeth . The three entrance portals are decorated with sculptured friezes and cornices . The side facades show Corinthian colonnades . Pilasters flank the arched arcade of the gallery.
