Velyki Sorochyntsi ( Ukrainian Великі Сорочинці ; Russian Большие Сорочинцы Bolshie Sorochyntsi , and 1620: Krasnopil / Краснопіль ) is a rural community in the central Ukraine myrhorod raion ( Poltava ) on the right bank of the river Psel .
history
During the Polish period the place had the status of a city. At that time this area belonged to the lands of Prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki . During a Cossack rebellion in 1648 Velyki Sorotschynzi received its own Cossack unit, which belonged to the group of the city of Myrhorod .
At the beginning of the 17th century, at the instigation of the hetman Danylo Apostol, the Transfiguration Church was built in the style of the Ukrainian baroque . The hetman's tomb is also located in this church. In 1809 the writer Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol was baptized in this church . He described the later famous fair in Sorochynzi in one of his short stories , after which Mussorgsky later wrote an opera . At that time, however, this fair was no different from others in the region.
In 1900 there were 8,882 inhabitants in 1514 houses. There were a total of seven schools and five annual fairs. After the fairs came to a standstill in Soviet times, in 1966 the fair culture was revived in Velyki Sorochynzi. This tradition is continued today, with the market gaining national fame.
