Building history

Nothing is visible from the original medieval buildings. The buildings that have survived to this day are from the 15th to 18th centuries: half-timbered residential buildings (15th / 16th century), Torkelscheuer (16th century), back house (18th century). The coats of arms of both Konstanz and the Spitalstiftung Konstanz and the writing Rebgut Haltnau and Spitalstiftung Konstanz were placed above the entrance to the dining room in the 20th century.

During the winter break from 2017 to 2019, the foundation administration completely renovated the power supply, sewerage, heating, water pipes, kitchen, dining room and glazing of the arcades. Further fire protection walls, pellet heating, apartments on the upper floors, window replacement, bicycle and car parking spaces, beer garden and facade.

Legend of the Wendelgard

Haltnau has been part of the Spitalkellerei Konstanz Hospital Foundation since 1272 . Legend has it that Konstanz owes this property to the pork-trunked, humpbacked Wendelgard von Halte, who did not meet with approval in Meersburg itself: although she was the owner of the beautiful vineyard, people avoided her and had to eat her own food from a silver trough take. Wendelgard offered her estate to the city of Meersburg on the condition that a councilor dined with her every day and that she was allowed to go out on Sundays, also accompanied by a councilor. The Meersburgers did not reject this, but thought too long. The people from Konstanz contacted afterwards did not hesitate and accepted their offer. Wendelgard got a place in the Hospital of the Holy Spirit on the Marktstätte (Constance).

Ridiculous verses

This gesture by the councilors of Constance towards Wendelgard mentioned in the verse

“For the good of the city despite the trunk

I'll eat from this bowl.
The Wendelgard resembles the pig
But I strengthen myself on Haltnauwein. "
- Thoughts of the councilors of Konstanz on Wendelgard von Halt according to Norbert Fromm, Michael Kuthe, Walter Rügert

was immortalized, is said to have been over 90 years old and survived many councilors who rendered her the required service.

Transfer of Haltnau

A document in the Konstanz city archive specifies the facts of the legend:

"After that, on November 6th, 1272 a Constance citizen named Ulrich, called Sumbri, donated a vineyard in 'Halthuon' to the Heilig-Geist-Spital in Constance with the stipulation that the hospital would give 20 buckets of wine (approx . 1'400 liters) had to deliver. "

The wines that are grown on the Haltnau benefit from the south-westerly location of the vineyards and the nature of the soil, which contains molasses and moraines gravel . They belong to the Meersburger Haltnau location and have been owned by the Spitalkellerei Konstanz , the oldest foundation winery in Germany, since 1272 . The following grape varieties are grown in the Meersburg Haltnau location: Müller-Thurgau , Pinot Blanc , Traminer , Pinot , Pinot Noir .

The Rebwächterhäusle up on the vineyard at a height of 439 meters is also part of Haltnau. It is from around 1600 and has a floor plan of 3 × 3 meters. On the ground floor there is a tool shed and the staircase, the cantilevered upper floor is a half-timbered building with a window on each side. It was used to supervise the vineyards. The double cross of the Konstanz Hospital is attached to the roof.

Haltnau in literature and art

Wendelgard figure by Peter Lenk

The inn of the same name is an important location in Martin Walser's story Letter to Lord Liszt , in which the Wendelgard legend is also taken up.

Wendelgard von Halt was immortalized in 2007 by Peter Lenk on the "Magic Column" .

Annette von Droste-Hülshoff wrote in a letter from 1843 to Elise Rüdiger , b. Hohenhausen, her search for protection in the Halt e nau ("the rage outside") and her arduous way back to Meersburg during a storm described ("But I stayed between the vines, about thirty feet above the wall path").

Memory of Wendelgard

  • Weinstube "Zur Wendelgard" in the Niederburg district of Constance, Inselgasse 5
  • Wendelgardweg (Konstanz) on the banks of the Konstanz funnel to the Horn outdoor pool
  • Wendelgard was introduced to the old Konstanz Hansele guild in 2009 as a single fool figure. The fool's figure wears a wooden mask made of linden wood with a bump on the forehead and a hump in the nose. She carries a wheel cover from Constance, two miniature wine barrels and a Saublot (pig's bladder filled with air) and takes part in the Constance Butzen Run.
