Wendelin Chapel

The Wendelinskapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in Hellikon in the canton of Aargau . It belongs to the parish of Wegenstetten- Hellikon and stands at the southern edge of the village.

When the chapel was built can no longer be proven. The oldest existing components date from the middle of the 17th century. The patron of the church was the Säckingen Abbey . Towards the end of the 18th century, the building was increasingly neglected due to heavy humidity. In order to finance the renovation, the community was able to assert its claim to the chapel property in court in 1804, which had been illegally allocated to the church of Wegenstetten by the women's monastery. From 1873, Catholics and Christ Catholics shared the chapel until the latter built their own church in the immediate vicinity in 1947/48. A comprehensive restoration took place from 1953 to 1956.

The square chapel building consists of simple, whitewashed quarry stone walls and a gable roof. Inside, two free columns and a cranked beam structure the main floor. An early Baroque retable stands on the bricked block altar . Two small columns and a shell-shaped gable form the altar extension with a picture of Saint Fridolin (patron saint of the Säckingen monastery). On the side of the main floor are two late Gothic sculptures that date from around 1500 and were made in Basel . They represent the Archangel Michael and possibly Hilary of Poitiers . They are probably in the church of Wegenstetten before they came to Hellikon in 1741. The Vesper picture placed in the cafeteria , which is around a hundred years older, is also said to come from Wegenstetten .
