Wendsee
The Wendsee is located west of the Havelknee, in which the Brandenburg main river, the Havel , coming from the Plauer See , bends to the north. The lake covers an area of around 80 hectares and has a maximum water depth of 4.9 meters.
Surname
The name "Wendsee" can be traced back to the German name for the local Slavic population, which the German colonists have grouped under the collective term " Wenden " since the eastward expansion . The old, original name of the lake was Kiausee . It is called Coione in a document from 1294 . In 1692, the corresponding corridor was referred to as the Kiegaue . The word Kiau is assigned to the old Polish word * kujava , which still occurs today in Ukrainian and Polish water names and is translated as "hum, murmur". In the Brandenburg district of Plaue , bordering the northern bank of the Wendsee, the Kiaustraße still reminds of the old name of the lake.
Distinction
The Wendsee is divided into the Großer Wendsee and the Kleiner Wendsee . The latter connects to the Great Wendsee in the south and goes under the railway bridge of the Berlin - Magdeburg railway line into the "journey" that connects the Wendsee with the Wusterwitzer See .
function
The Große Wendsee separates the districts of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel Plaue and Kirchmöser West. It is part of the federal waterway Elbe-Havel-Kanal with the waterway class IV. The small Wendsee is part of the so-called other inland waterway of the federal small Wendsee-Wusterwitzer See. The Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .
Ecological situation
Misuse by the German and Soviet armed forces during the 20th century caused serious ecological damage to the water . A contaminated and oily layer of mud still lies at the bottom . Regardless, swimming in Wendsee is harmless.
