The Große Wusterwitzer See or just Wusterwitzer See is a lake in the west of the state of Brandenburg near the village of Wusterwitz , after which it was named.
description
Wusterwitz is located on the west bank of the lake. The name is derived from the Old Polish word vostrov for island. The district boundary between Potsdam-Mittelmark and the independent city of Brandenburg an der Havel with its town and district Kirchmöser near the eastern shore of the lake runs through the lake. A peninsula protruding into the lake in the northwest bears the name Werdereck. The lake belongs to the Brandenburg city lake basin , also known as the Plauer Havel lake basin. It was created as an exaration basin directly in the rear of the ice rim during the Brandenburg phase of the Vistula glaciation . The Havel lakes are a traditional fishing area. After the decline of industries, the construction of sewage treatment plants and the reduction in the input of fertilizers through agriculture, the quality of the water has improved significantly.
The Wusterwitzer See has a drain to the north to the Wendsee . The area is about 172 hectares and it is about 9 meters deep. In terms of fishing , it is counted as a Zandersee or Eel - Pike- Zandersee to the fish-rich lakes of the Havel. In addition to a wide belt of reeds, the bank is occupied by bathing areas, boat docks and house plots. The occurrence of the endangered European strandling is described as a special feature .
In the 19th century, three brickworks were built on the lake that used it and the Havel as a route to Berlin and Brandenburg. Furthermore, a shipyard was built , each of which no longer exists. In the 1990s a marina was built and the promenade on the southern bank was expanded. Water tourism plays a significant role.
The Wusterwitzer See belongs to the federal waterway Wasserstraße (Kleiner) Wendsee-Wusterwitzer (See) (WWW), a side waterway of the Elbe-Havel Canal .
