Wentworth is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales with 1221 inhabitants (as of 2016). Wentworth is the administrative seat of the Wentworth Shire local authority .

history

The city is named after the important explorer and politician William Charles Wentworth . The Moorna Post Office , founded in 1855, was renamed Wentworth in 1860 . Wentworth Gaol Prison, which operated on the outskirts of the city from 1881 to 1929, is now a tourist attraction.

Geographical location

The city is located at the confluence of the Darling River with the Murray River , which forms the border with the state of Victoria to the south . It has a share in the two largest rivers on the Australian continent. In the urban area, the Silver City Highway, numbered B79, runs on a bridge over the Darling River.
