Coordinates: 33 ° 18 ′  S , 142 ° 36 ′  E Wentworth Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 26,256.2 km² and has about 6,800 inhabitants.

Wentworth is located in the south-west corner of the state on the lower reaches of the Darling River and the Murray River , the border with Victoria , and is approximately 1,000 km from the metropolis of Sydney and 390 km from Adelaide . The area includes 50 hamlets and towns, including Anabranch, Arumpo, Cal Lal, Curlwaa, Dareton, Gol, Gol, Monak, Mourquong, Palinyewah, Pan Ban, Pomona, Pooncarie, Rufus River and Wentworth. The Shire Council is located in the village of Wentworth on the southern border of the LGA, where about 1,200 people live.

Wentworth Shire Council has nine members elected by LGA residents. Wellington is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
