Werner Senger House

The Werner-Senger-Haus is a listed half-timbered house from the 13th century in the old town of Limburg an der Lahn , Rütsche 5. It was once the seat of wealthy Limburg merchants for centuries. It is still unclear whether the house was ever occupied by the merchant Werner Senger, who lived in the nearby Brückengasse, and how it erroneously got his name.

architecture

The Werner Senger House is a plastered, three-sided massive house with a half-timbered facade. The elaborate diamond ashlar painting of the half-timbering gives the impression that it is a completely stone house with painted half-timbering. Inside there is a groined vaulted cellar.

History of the building

The house was first mentioned in a document in 1274, after Gisela Weiss transferred it to the Eberbach monastery on a long lease. It is estimated that it was built around 20 years earlier. Since it was partially preserved during the great city fire in 1289, it is now the oldest known house in Limburg's old town. Originally, the house was located directly on the Limburg market area Unter den Gaden , a section of the Hohen Strasse from Cologne to Frankfurt. After the construction of the stone bridge over the Lahn , the traffic management shifted to the northwest in the 14th century.

In 1802 the house with the address Rütsche 5 received a lot of attention when the robber Johannes Bückler , known as "Schinderhannes", was arrested near Limburg and brought into this house. At that time it was a recruiting center for the Imperial Army , which also took criminals and deserters into custody. From there Bückler was brought to Frankfurt am Main .

In 1970 the house was renovated after several changes of ownership. Today it houses a restaurant .
