The Werner von Siemens Grammar School in Großenhain is one of the largest schools in Saxony . It consists of two buildings and uses three different gyms. It has its own observatory. There is also a large cafeteria in the south wing of the main building for lunch breaks. The school distinguishes itself through participation in various projects such as the GLOBE program , Rock Challenge, Join Multimedia or various art competitions. European studies are also taught in the upper secondary level.

history

After the existing school buildings in the city burned down in 1540 and 1744, the foundation stone of today's main school building was laid on May 28, 1889. In 1899 the gym , which is still located on the building, was built, and a school garden was added in 1906 .

On March 19, 1927, the school was christened Pestalozzischule . At that time the building was still used as a secondary school with up to 2,700 students.

During the Second World War it was temporarily used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. After the war, the school was divided into three parts, as many school buildings in the area were destroyed during the war. From 1948 the school was divided into the Pestalozzi School North and South. From 1949 the Pestalozzi School North was called the Goethe School from then on . In 1950 the Pestalozzi School was divided again - the boys' school became the independent 3rd elementary school "Clara-Zetkin". The auxiliary school section was given its own building on Radeburger Platz. In 1953 the Pestalozzi School was upgraded to a high school. In 1992 the Goethe and Pestalozzi School became the main building of the Großenhain grammar school (with a branch at the shaft - formerly EOS). In 1993, due to the high number of pupils, the branch of the grammar school on Hohen Strasse was inaugurated, which is still used today for secondary level II.

In 1998, a democratic vote between students and teachers resulted in the election of the new namesake of the school, which was christened Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium on April 6, 2001.

In the years 2001–2005 the main building was extensively renovated , during which an observatory with the most modern equipment was installed on the roof of the building for advanced astronomy lessons.
