Helmut Kiene (born June 13, 1952 in Nördlingen ) is a German doctor, scientist and anthroposophist . He heads the Institute for Applied Epistemology and Medical Methodology, which he co-founded, at the University of Witten / Herdecke . He wrote numerous papers on basic scientific questions in medicine, advocating a pluralism of methods for medical research that should also do justice to complementary medical directions. In the 1970s he was a sport climber .

Helmut Kiene studied medicine in Freiburg with a subsequent doctorate. Today he lives and works in the Black Forest as a specialist in internal medicine and oncology .

He is co-founder of the Institute for Applied Epistemology and Medical Methodology e. V. in Freiburg i. Brsg. and author of epistemological and scientific theory and medical works dealing with the basics of knowledge acquisition in medicine. He questions paradigms of current medical research practice and wants to make them understandable on a larger scale. He is a member of the Pluralism in Medicine Dialogue Forum, which was co-founded in 2000 by the then President of the German Medical Association , Jörg-Dietrich Hoppe . He is co-author of a book on mistletoe in oncology. He is a member of the four-member executive board of the international research advisory board of the medical section of the School of Spiritual Science.

In "Basics of an Essential Philosophy of Science" he investigates the question of the meaning of an essential knowledge (essential knowledge) in science. This is of great importance. The current scientific culture, however, is strongly characterized by anti-essentialism.

His draft "Cognition-based medicine" is trying to reference the work of the Gestalt psychologist Karl Duncker means " phenomenal causality ", the randomized study as generally recognized main means of knowledge of evidence-based medicine is a method of knowledge, focusing on the individual case knowledge to put to the side. This method was partly taken up in complementary medicine. Together with Ronald Grossarth-Maticek, Kiene published a study on mistletoe therapy in which the synergy effects with other therapeutic measures applied at the same time become clear.

Alpinism

Together with Reinhard Karl , he opened the first alpine climbing route in the VII level of difficulty (UIAA) in 1977 , the Fleischbank - Pumprisse in the Wilder Kaiser .

His solo ascents distinguish him as one of the leading alpinists of the seventies. So he mastered the entire Peuterey ridge and the crossing of Grands Montets - Aiguille Verte - Grandes Jorasses - Toriner Hütte .

The so-called "Kiene-Swing" is named after Helmut Kiene and is performed in a similar way to a bungee jump. In contrast to the bungee jump, the rope in the Kiene Swing is not attached above the jumper, but away from him (Helmut Kiene performed this jump on two parallel bridges, for example). As a result, a long pendulum swing ("swing") is carried out after the free fall.
