The Aiguille des Grands Montets (often just Grands Montets ) is a 3295 m high mountain in the Mont Blanc group . It is located in the French department of Haute-Savoie . The Grand Montets cable car leads to its summit.
location
The Aiguille des Grands Montets is south of Argentière . Aiguille Verte rises further south, separated by the Col des Grands Montets ( 3233 m ) . On its eastern flank, the mountain bears the Glacier des Rognons, which slopes down to the Glacier d'Argentière .
Development
The Aiguille des Grands Montets is best known for the Les Grands Montets ski area , which is located on the northern flank of the mountain and is reached from Argentière. An aerial tramway leads from Argentière to the actual summit via the Lognan middle station ( 1973 m ) . The railway was put into operation in 1963. In addition to being used as a ski area, the summit often serves as a starting point for ski tours and as the starting point of the Haute Route , a well-known ski crossing. The railway is also in operation in summer.
On September 11, 2018, both sections of the cable car to the summit were destroyed by fire in the Lognan middle station. Nobody was injured and the reconstruction could take several years.
