The Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium is a high school with a mathematical, scientific and technical focus in Magdeburg . During the school career, special emphasis is placed on promoting talented students in the fields of mathematics, science and technology. However, before one can switch to school in the fifth grade, an entrance examination must be taken in which students can prove their talents in the areas of specialization.

The catchment area of the school is the entire state of Saxony-Anhalt. A boarding school is available for students outside of Magdeburg or the Magdeburg region.

It is named after the inventor Werner von Siemens .

location

The school building is located in the Alte Neustadt district . There the school uses the former building of the polytechnic high school "Ernst Thälmann", which has been completely renovated and adapted to the needs of the grammar school. In addition, a new building was built in which the cabinets for the departments of computer science, physics, chemistry and biology are located. The sports hall was also rebuilt.

The school can be reached by tram line 2. The Stendaler Straße stop is right in front of the main entrance to the school grounds.

In the immediate vicinity is the Magdeburg Science Harbor , where the Long Night of Science takes place every year. There are also important research institutes in the city, including the Fraunhofer Institute and the Max Planck Institute .

history

Former building of the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium on Pablo-Neruda-Straße

In 1988, the special school of mathematics, science and technology was founded with only two special classes. At that time the school did not yet have the name Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium and was housed in the building of what was then EOS Otto von Guericke on Harsdorfer Straße. Gerhard Muth was offered the management of today's grammar school. In 1989 the school moved into its own school building at Pablo-Neruda-Straße 13. After the fall of the Wall , the school was declared a state high school in 1991 and in 1992 it was decided to keep the special focus. In 1993 the grammar school received its current name and was handed over to the city of Magdeburg. In the following year a support association was founded. In 1995, the teaching facility was recognized by the highest school authorities as a grammar school with a focus on mathematics, science and technology, and entrance exams were prescribed. In the same year the school got a dedicated line to the Internet. Since 1999 the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium has been a cooperation school of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and since 2001 a member of the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers at Schools eV

Since the school building at that time was only intended as a "temporary solution", teachers and the support association have been campaigning for a new school building since 1995. The Magdeburg type severely restricted the opportunities for teaching and extra-curricular activities. Since 2006, classrooms from neighboring schools had to be used because the space required by the Werner von Siemens grammar school exceeded the space available in the school building.

In the summer of 2009, the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium moved to a renovated building on Stendaler Strasse near the Science Harbor, after the foundation stone for an additional extension was laid on March 5, 2008.

On August 6, 2009, an opening event for the inauguration of the new building took place.

In January 2011, the headmaster Gerhard Muth retired. He was succeeded by Manfred Bäthge on November 4, 2011. In the 2013/14 school year, Frank Skroblien was the acting headmaster. On September 1, 2014, Frank Skroblien was appointed principal.

Course offer

classes

As a state school, the grammar school is subject to the curricula and framework guidelines of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. With special permission from the Ministry of Culture of Saxony-Anhalt, extended content is offered in mathematics and the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology). In this way, students can be given one more hour per week in the subjects mentioned. This is attested to them with a special certificate.

In contrast to other schools in the state, computer science is taught since the seventh grade. Programming in Delphi begins in the eighth grade .

Another specialty is the subject of rhetoric. Here the students are taught skills in presenting and giving lectures. However, due to cuts, the subject was discontinued.

English is taught from the fifth grade onwards. In the seventh grade, students have to choose between French and Russian, and from the ninth grade onwards, Latin can also be taken.

Working groups

In addition to normal school lessons, various working groups and subsidies are also offered. Funding is intended to provide students who stand out due to their special achievements in the classroom with advanced teaching material. Work is also being carried out here with regard to upcoming competitions, such as the federal competition for information technology.

Although the school has a special profile, there are also working groups in other departments. A theater group or sports work groups (for badminton and volleyball ) are offered.

Specialist camp

In addition to top funding, so-called specialist camps are offered. These are carried out once a year in parallel with lessons, usually for a week. Certain topics for interested students are deepened here. The specialist camps are accompanied by lectures, which are often also given by former students. The specialist camps are also accessible to students from other schools on request. Currently, camps for mathematics, biology, IT and technology (internal for high school students) are offered.

Correspondence circle

The school also offers correspondence circles for students from other schools. After registering, they are regularly sent tasks that they should complete within a certain period of time. After the solutions have been sent by post, they are checked by teachers from the high school. There are circles for mathematics, biology, physics and chemistry. These are already offered to primary school students in order to arouse their interest in mathematics or natural sciences at an early stage.

particularities

Infrastructure

Most of the school building is covered by WiFi, so that every teacher and student has the option of using the internet while on the move. In addition, students can use the computer rooms when there are no classes to do Internet research. In addition, the school has had a Sun Ray system from Sun Microsystems since the 2009/2010 school year .

Student assistant

Large parts of the computer network are administered by students, the student assistants in the computer science department. This also includes the programming and design of websites.

Early study

Since the 2008/2009 school year, interested high school students have had the opportunity to study at Otto von Guericke University alongside their school lessons. A study plan is drawn up and the students are enrolled at the university . They can also take part in the semester exams; the credits they have earned will be credited to them for later studies. In the 2008/2009 school year, six 11th grade students took advantage of the offer. You were enrolled on October 9, 2008.

Boarding school

Schoolchildren who live outside of Magdeburg or the Magdeburg area can attend boarding school. It is located approx. 4 km away on Albert-Vater-Straße in the Stadtfeld Ost district . From there it takes 20-30 minutes by bus and tram to reach the school.

The costs amount to around 2500 euros per year, whereby the parents have to pay their own contribution of 1250 euros. The other half is borne by the district in which the student has his main residence.
