House of Austria in Literature and Politics ”, Anzenberger completed his doctorate in the humanities .

Journalistic and public work

To date, Anzenberger has published numerous legal, political and historical monographs, essays and contributions in collective works. The main focus of his historical research is on the history of National Socialism and the history of Austrofascism . He is considered to be one of the pioneers in coming to terms with the resistance against the Nazi regime in Styria . Another research focus is the history of Austrian social democracy and its work in the First Republic . The social democratic February uprising , which he interpreted as "resistance for a democracy", plays a special role within this complex of topics . Anzenberger also deals with the history of the Styrian Chamber of Labor. To mark its anniversary, he published a commemorative publication entitled “100 Years of Justice”.

Anzenberger published his first novel on February 12, 2020 under the pseudonym Peter Veran. It was the grotesque "Plea of a Martyr". In this work, the state chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss is brought to justice and tries to justify his work. In a sprawling monologue, he unmasked himself. His disdain for democracy and the rule of law is sometimes expressed in an involuntarily funny way. After his novel was published, Anzenberger went on a reading tour that led through numerous Austrian cities. However, some planned readings had to be canceled due to the Corona crisis. The tour should be continued in September 2020. Outside Austria, the book was presented at the Leipzig Book Fair, among other places. “The Plea of a Martyr” received mostly positive reviews. The Kleine Zeitung described it as light-footed, entertaining and yet oppressive. Anzenberger's skillful portrayal of the cruel comedy of deeply bourgeois fascization was praised by the Junge Welt . The review appeared on the front page of the literature supplement in June 2020. The editor-in-chief Florian Felix Weyh from Kulturradio Deutschland compared Peter Veran with Helmut Qualtinger, the editor-in-chief Hannes Nagel of “Das FlugblattI / Musenblatt” with Kurt Tucholsky. The book reached number five on the Austria-wide bestseller list.

On February 12, he regularly gives lectures and speeches all over Austria, mostly to a social democratic audience. Often the life and work of the executed SDAP politician Koloman Wallisch receive special attention. In the historical discourse between 1934 and 1938, Anzenberger is a strong advocate of the term “ Austrofascism ”.

In October 2008, he gave a speech on the occasion of the inauguration of the newly designed Leoben memorial for the victims of National Socialism. In November 2018, on Anzenberger's initiative, the first Stolperstein was laid in honor of the local resistance fighter Simon Trevisani. In September 2019, the project continued with the laying of seven stumbling blocks in honor of victims of the Holocaust. As early as April 2018, Anzenberger, together with the Mayor of Leoben, Kurt Wallner, presented additional boards that refer to the National Socialist sentiments of Hans Kloepfer , Ottokar Kernstock and Friedrich Mayer-Beck, after whom streets are named. A similar project is currently being implemented in Bruck an der Mur in cooperation with Mayor Peter Koch.
