Werner Baake
Werner Baakenhafen (* 1. November 1918 in Nordhausen am Harz , † 15. July 1964 in Ansbach ) was an officer of the Air Force in World War II and night fighter -Pilot.
Life
In 1942 Baake switched to Night Fighter Wing 1 in Gilze en Rijen . On July 27, 1944, he was awarded the Knight's Cross for his 33rd kill. In 1944 Baake took over command of the 1st group of the squadron ( Heinkel He 219 ). In total, he achieved 41 night kills in 195 enemy flights.
After the war, Baake was a Lufthansa pilot . He was killed in the crash of a Lufthansa Boeing 720 in 1964 near the central Franconian town of Ansbach . On a training flight with the Boeing 720 "Bremen" ( registration D-ABOP), the crew tried to fly another one after one successful barrel roll . During the unauthorized aerobatic maneuver, the machine broke apart due to structural overload and all three occupants were killed.
