Werner Buttler

Werner Buttler (born June 19, 1907 in Einbeck ; † May 12, 1940 in Altwies, Mondorf ) was a German prehistoric and National Socialist .

Life

Buttler received his doctorate in 1930 at the University of Marburg with Gero von Merhart with the thesis "The band ceramics in their north-westerly distribution area" . In 1931/32 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Then he dug up the ceramics settlement of Cologne-Lindenthal and the Erdenburg in Moitzfeld , the first excavation officially sponsored by the SS . In 1934 he became custodian of the museum in Cologne, in July 1936 he received his habilitation, in September 1936 he became a scientific assistant in the department for soil conservation of the Reich Ministry of Education . In 1938 he became an associate professor at the University of Göttingen , but was still on leave of absence from the ministry “for service”.

Buttler, who had been a member of the SA and NSDAP since 1930 , was accepted into the SS in 1936. He successfully turned against the attempts made by the Rosenberg Office and especially Hans Reinerth to control German prehistoric archeology, and strengthened the influence of the SS on the subject. At the beginning of the Second World War he volunteered for the Wehrmacht . He fell in Luxembourg at the beginning of the war.
