Werner Cohn (sociologist)

Werner Cohn (born March 24, 1926 in Berlin ; died October 19, 2018 in Brooklyn , New York ) was a Canadian social scientist who has published on the sociology of Jews and Sinti and Roma as well as political sociology. He was a professor at the University of British Columbia .

Life

Werner Cohn was a son of the doctor James Cohn and Else Rosenbaum. The family had to emigrate from Germany to the USA in 1938. Cohn trained as a mechanic, received American citizenship in 1944 and was a soldier in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 . He attended City College in New York City from 1948 to 1951 and then studied at the New School for Social Research , where he received his doctorate in 1956. Cohn married Rita Pressner in 1951 and they had four children. While studying, Cohn worked for an apartment management company. From 1956 he taught at Northland College in Ashland (Wisconsin) and in 1960 went to the University of British Columbia as an assistant . In 1973 he received a professorship in sociology there.

Cohn was the author of The Gypsies (1973); His study Religion and Society in Developing Countries (1969) was published in German.
