In the summer of 1969, the winger talent made his debut together with Udo Böhs , Alfred Hussner and Horst Wohlers under coach Erwin Türk with the Braun-Whites in the then second division, the Regionalliga Nord. In the second year, 1970/71, he moved into the Bundesliga promotion round with St. Pauli as north runner-up. In 1972 and 1973 he celebrated the championship in the north twice with the Millerntorelf, but failed each in the promotion rounds.

For the last year of the old regional league second division, 1973/74, Greth then moved to the Regional League West at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . With the Kleeblatt-Club he finished second behind master SG Wattenscheid 09 - in the league he had scored six goals in 33 appearances for the team around goalkeeper Dieter Ferner and striker Lothar Kobluhn - and thus made it back to the promotion round. The promotion could not be realized against Tennis Borussia Berlin and FC Augsburg, but RWO qualified as runner-up for the newly created 2. Bundesliga 1974/75. In 1975 Oberhausen was relegated to the amateur camp as 18th, Greth had played 35 games and scored four goals. He then moved to the 1975/76 round for 1. FC Saarbrücken in the 2nd Bundesliga South, with which he won the championship alongside fellow players Felix Magath and Egon Schmitt and was promoted to the Bundesliga. In 38 missions he had scored two goals for the Saarlanders. In the 1976/77 season he brought it to twelve missions. He then played a season in the 2nd Bundesliga for Bayer Uerdingen in 1977/78. With his teammates Friedhelm Funkel and Jan Mattsson , he finished seventh with Bayer and had contributed two goals in 30 league games.

After his active career, the trained technical draftsman worked in a chemical plant in Duisburg-Homberg and died in an accident at work. He fell into a nitrogen vat and froze to death at −170 degrees Celsius.
