Werner II of Falkenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner II von Falkenberg was a highly respected and influential nobleman from North Hesse from the family of the Lords of Falkenberg, whose ancestral seat was Falkenberg Castle near Wabern in North Hesse .

Life

In the area of tension between the Landgraviate of Hesse and the Archdiocese of Mainz , he leaned against Count von Ziegenhain, who were also opposed to Count von Ziegenhain, considering the expansive policy of the Landgraves in Kurmainz and the landgrave dominance in North Hesse . So in November 1363 he became a hereditary castle man in Ziegenhain , where he built the “Stone House” (today the Schwalm Museum ) as his castle seat. At the same time he acquired from Count Gottfried VII von Ziegenhain all of the Ziegenhain tithes that had become free through the death of Ludwig von Romrod .

In 1369 he and (his brother?) Konrad IV. (Kuno) acquired the Hausen Castle , in 1370 half of the Herzberg Castle . In 1392 the latter passed into the ownership of Werner and his son Konrad (Kunzmann) von Falkenberg.

Werner von Falkenberg was a leading member of the Star League directed against the Hessian Landgrave Heinrich II and his nephew and co-regent Hermann II and participated in the ultimately unsuccessful Star War (1371-1373) against the Landgraves.

In 1374, after the end of the Star Wars, he was made Oberamtmann and Landvogt in Mainz over all possessions of the Archbishopric in Hesse, Thuringia, Westphalia, Saxony and Eichsfeld . He held this office until 1382, when Konrad II von Spiegel zum Desenberg († 1399) was his successor.

progeny

Werner von Falkenberg probably died in the last decade of the 14th century.

Konrad von Falkenberg (Kunzmann), who was involved in the murder of Duke Friedrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg on June 5, 1400 , was his son.
