Konrad von Falkenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad von Falkenberg († 1417), who called himself "Kunzmann", was a Hessian knight from the von Falkenberg family, whose ancestral seat was Falkenberg Castle near Wabern in northern Hesse . He was the son of the highly respected Werner II von Falkenberg , who was Mainz governor from 1374 to 1382 over the possessions of the archbishopric in Hesse, Thuringia, Westphalia, Saxony and the Eichsfeld. He himself resided at Herzberg Castle , which his father had acquired in part in 1370 and he and his father had acquired it from the last Herzberger in 1392.

"Regicide"

Kunzmann was involved in the murder of Duke Friedrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg on June 5, 1400 . Duke Friedrich had been proposed by some electors at the prince's day of Frankfurt at the end of May 1400 as anti-king to Wenceslaus of Luxembourg . Since Archbishop Johann II of Mainz, who would rather see his own candidate Ruprecht von der Pfalz on the throne, rejected this proposal, all parties left in disagreement. Duke Friedrich was on his ride home to Braunschweig on June 5, 1400 at Fritzlar , near the present-day village of Kleinenglis , by Count Heinrich VII von Waldeck and his cronies Kunzmann (Konrad) von Falkenberg and Friedrich III. murdered by Hertingshausen . The so-called Kaiserkreuz von Kleinenglis, made of sandstone, has stood at the murder site since the 15th century .

progeny

Kunzmann's widow had her widow's residence at Hausen Castle from 1417 to 1422 . His son and heir Werner († 1441) lived at Herzberg Castle, but already in 1417 sold part of the castle to Landgrave Ludwig I of Hesse and pledged the rest to him, which later became a purchase. With Werner, the Herzberg line of the Falkenberger went out.
