Werner Kirsch (animal breeder)

Werner Kirsch (born January 2, 1901 in Osterode , East Prussia , † May 20, 1975 in Kiel ) was an agricultural scientist , feeding expert and animal breeder .

Life

Kirsch passed his matriculation examination, underwent an agricultural training from 1919 to 1922 through teaching and administrative work, studied agriculture and zoology at the University of Königsberg , did his doctorate in the field of animal breeding under Wilhelm Voeltz and completed his habilitation in this subject in 1928. As a private lecturer he was deputy head from 1929 to 1933 and then until 1944 full professor for animal breeding and animal husbandry and director of the institute for animal breeding in Königsberg , from 1947 to 1954 director of the institute for milk production of the Federal Research Institute for Dairy Industry in Kiel and at the same time deputy professor for feeding studies, Animal breeding and husbandry at the University of Kiel . In 1954, Kirsch accepted a position at the Hohenheim Agricultural University , where he succeeded Jonas Schmidt and worked until his retirement in 1967.

In his research work, Kirsch mainly dealt with the constitution and health of lowland cattle as well as the feeding and feed quality with regard to their influence on milk yield. He published approx. 200 publications, mostly of experimental content.

Awards

  • Kirsch was awarded the Henneberg-Lehmann Prize by the University of Göttingen for his theoretical and practical work .
  • He received the Adolf Köppe needle from the German Society for Breeding Science .
  • The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover awarded him the title of Dr. med. vet. hc
  • The German Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Berlin appointed him a corresponding member in 1957.
  • In 1967 Kirsch was awarded the Hermann von Nathusius Medal by the DGfZ for his achievements in animal breeding.
