In 1950 he entered the service of the MfS, initially in the Mecklenburg state administration and later in the Schwerin district administration . In 1965 he became Deputy Operational of the Head of the District Administration in this department . As early as 1968, he succeeded Colonel Rudolf Vödisch as head of the Schwerin district administration of the Ministry for State Security and remained in office until his dismissal in 1990, which was accompanied by the dissolution of the MfS. At the same time he was a member of the SED district leadership in Schwerin. In 1979 he was appointed major general. After his release he was arrested by the GDR authorities. He was charged with illegal possession of weapons and corruption in connection with the inexpensive purchase of a country house from his own office. The Schwerin District Court found him guilty of infidelity in the summer of 1991 and sentenced him to two years and ten months' imprisonment without parole. In May 1992 the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) rejected Korth's appeal against the judgment. For formal reasons, the BGH reduced the sentence to two years and eight months in prison. Korth had to face the penalty.
